What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
